What is a Proxy Server?
A proxy server is a kind of buffer between your computer and the Internet resources you are accessing (e.g. Web sites or FTP archives). The data you request come to the proxy first, and only then it transmits the data to you.
Why use a Proxy Server?
Usually, proxy servers are used to increase the effective speed of your connection to the Internet, as they save files that are requested most often in a special database called "cache". The cache of a proxy server is generally huge in its capacity, and contains not only the requests made by you, but also the files that have been requested by hundreds, if not thousands, of other Internet users. As a result, the information you need may already be present in cache by the time of your request, making it possible for the proxy to deliver it immediately. The overall increase in performance may be very high. Besides that, proxy servers can help in cases when, for example, the owners of the Internet resource impose some restrictions on users from certain countries or geographic regions.
Transparent proxy
Is one of the methods to force users to use proxy within local network. They use proxy without awareness, so they do not know even that in fact they use proxy. Such proxy is not even configuring by users.
Anonymous
It is a proxy server which is free and open for everybody on the Internet. There is quite a large number of public proxy servers in many countries but most of them are not anonymous.
High anonymity (elite proxy)
High Anonymous (real anonymous!) proxy servers don't transfer the information about the IP-address of the client, and thus effectively hide the information about you and your surfing interests. Besides that, some proxy servers can also hide the very fact that you are surfing through a proxy server! Anonymous proxies can be used for all kinds of Web-services, such as Web-Mail (MSN Hot Mail, Yahoo mail), web-chat rooms, FTP archives, etc.

Hi! i recently had a virus on my laptop and i used malwarebytes and it completely got rid of the virus =) however, now my internet explorer isnt working. my mozilla and all other programs work fine. just internet explorer. before it said that there was a proxy problem. now it is saying that firewall is currently blocking the world wide web service (http) what can i do about this? i thought maybe i should disable the firewall..but then my computer won't be protected from viruses. any advice would be helpful! i like using internet explorer more than mozilla... thank you in advance! - Resolved Question: How are ISP's, proxies and the tor network related?
Okay. So. I just started using tor. And it's really cool when I check my IP and it says I'm in Germany. But all that fun stuff aside, I need someone to tell me how exactly does this work? What is the route taken when using tor, or when using a web proxy? Where does my ISP come in? Is it like: my request > my ISP > tor network > proxy > destination. Or is it different? Is the link between me and my ISP encrypted? Where do DNS servers come in? I'm using the Google DNS - so how does that relate to this? Also, how do Tor exit nodes work? Does my data bounces through the tor network encrypted, and then exits from an exit node unencrypted? Hello All, Here is what I need to do: I need an extension for Firefox to modify content of the pages before it shows them. to do this I need some kind of proxy that when I a URL is retrieved from internet, it goes to my extension and after processing I send to Firefox to show. I tried grease monkey but it is not what I want, it is modifying the page after it is loaded and when the page contains javascript errors, it won't work at all. A use for this is removing some parts of pages like scripts, CSS and or part of document like the menus that I don't want to see. I have programming knowledge but the problem is I don't know where to start! I couldn't find any information about proxy writing in firefox extensions documents. @arus.geo: your answer is not related! I need something like adblock plus for firefox but not for removing images or blocking urls, I want to pre-process the html page before firefox show them in screen. Hey guys, I recently contracted a virus on my Windows 7 64bit operating system. I didnt install any anti-virus software (stupid on my part). I dont exactly know what to do. The virus installs a fake virus scan and doesn't allow me to run an .exe's. also it changed my internet settings so i cant surf the web and download an antivirus software. i keep getting some proxy error when i try. I tried using a program called combofix, but because its windows 7 64bit, its not allowing me to run it. Are their any programs I can try that will allow me fix my computer? remember, i dont have internet on the computer, i can only access the internet from other computers near me. So i am trying to get on the oovoo website but my web browser says page cannot be found. so i tried it on internet explorer and firefox. then i tried my computer in the living room and a laptop. all connected to one router. so i went into the router and looked around in the security tab and still nothing. then i made exceptions for it on norton and turned off windows fire wall. i restarted my router also. i poked around in the web browser for exceptions also. so i tried a proxy site and i was able to get on the oovoo site but unable to click the download button. i did download and install it from a different site but then could not connect to the chat. i was using an account i made a while back when this actually worked. i have no idea what else there is to do. - Resolved Question: How do I get the same Google results in China as in the US?
I'm traveling to China tomorrow for vacation with my dad, and I have some homework to do there that requires the internet. I know that when I use google there, the results will be different that if I use it in the US. Is there any way to get the results that I would normally get if I was searching from home? I dad also gave me a program called UltraSurf, which allows me to go to China censored web pages, but does the program also do what I'm asking (get the same Google results as if I were at home)? My internet explorer is not able to browse and connect to the internet. Every time I open IE8 is says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". I tried the Diagnose Connection Problems and it didn't detect any problems. I tried: Tools>Internet Options>Connections Tab>LAN settings>unchecked proxy server> checked Automatically detect settings. I restarted IE8 but it still won't work!!! I tried "Restore advanced settings" and "Reset Internet Explorer settings" in the internet options but still won't work :( Firefox connects to the internet just fine. but I need IE8 to work because I can't use Skype and Windows Live Messenger. I tried downloading IE7 and it still has the same problem. *Note*: I recently have been receiving malwares or viruses. But I removed the malwares with a program called MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. For the viruses, I tried opening Norton 360 but it won't open it just keeps loading and nothing happens. I re-installed Norton and the same thing happens. So I downloaded Avast Anti-virus. Avast opens up by when i click "scan" nothing happens. I tried uninstalling Avast in the Add/remove programs but i can't find Avast in the list!!! So i tried deleting its folder manually, but its denied because it says "I need permission to perform this action". Even though I am the only user in the computer. By the way Im using Windows Vista. So then I downloaded AVG Anti-virus but it won't install because of some proxy issues. Also i tried updating programs such as Ccleaner and Tuneup Utilities 2010 but i can't update because the programs can't verify an internet connection. Even though im connected to the internet and can surf the web with firefox. I turned off Windows Firewall but it still won't work!!! Bottom line: I think i have a virus and some infected files but i can't remove them because all of my Anti-Virus programs won't work! I can't connect to internet explorer 8 and various programs can't update. How do i remove the virus and fix all this problem? It doesn't seem to matter which search engine is used. The result is almost always the same. This is the message that comes up: The connection has timed out The server at google.com is taking too long to respond. * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web. The server being used is Firefox if that makes any difference.
